🍅 On Saturday, October 19th, Kingman’s Third Annual Tomato Quest filled the vibrant Kingman Locomotive Park with family fun, culinary creativity, and tomato-themed excitement. Organized by the Mohave County Master Gardeners and the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, this free event showcased the versatility and appeal of tomatoes through a packed schedule of activities, contests, and entertainment.🎸
👩🍳 As someone who began working in the restaurant business at just 14 and spent the next decade tackling nearly every kitchen role imaginable, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for quality ingredients and genuine flavor. My experience co-founding a hot sauce business that sold in 29 states only deepened my respect for ingredients like the tomato, a true kitchen staple. I approach these events with an eye for authenticity, not influenced by paid promotions or trends, but shaped by hands-on experience.
🌱 Tomato Quest featured multiple contests, including Salsa, Taste, Cultivar, and the popular People’s Choice. During “Tomato Talk,” master gardeners shared expert gardening advice and handed out free seeds, encouraging attendees to grow their own tomatoes. Live music set a festive tone, creating an upbeat atmosphere as people explored the event.
🍽️ Local vendors and food trucks brought southwestern-inspired dishes to the festival, each offering unique, flavorful options. I sampled dishes from every food truck and appreciated the quality and creativity each vendor brought to the table. While prices varied and some items ventured into unique flavor territory, each dish offered a satisfying experience.🚜
🌶️ The word “salsa” can mean different things to different people. Some think of a spicy dip for chips, but “salsa” actually means “sauce” in Spanish. The salsas in the contest ranged widely in style; while some were traditional dips, others would work perfectly as enchilada or chimichanga sauces. After tasting each, I voted for the two that delivered the richest flavors.
🌵 With games and activities for kids and families, Tomato Quest truly celebrated community, gardening, and delicious food. The event connected people through shared knowledge, local gardening inspiration, and, of course, great food. I look forward to seeing Tomato Quest continue to grow and become a beloved Kingman tradition.🏜️
